Psychology Confidential: A Crazy Professor Tells Almost All the Adventures and Misadventures of His Life in Psychology Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Blair C Pietrini -- Humble beginnings, extraordinary results! : "What first stood out to me when reading this book, continued as a main thread woven throughout the book's entirety; the way in which John so very humbly shares his journey in Psychology sprinkled with self deprecating humor. Though this is a book about Psychology, John breaks it down so simply that the average laymen will have no trouble understanding the message therein. I strongly believe that his many accomplishments are nothing short of award-worthy, however, he lays them out in such a way that is both inspiring, and encouraging to the reader, leaving us with the belief that we can all make a difference in our prospective arenas. John's pioneering spirit coupled with child like faith and courage to try new things have benefitted many throughout the years, and I believe that his book will continue to do the same ( Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Good to Know -- Life Adventures : Dr. John has such a reservoir of experiences and stories to tell, it must have been quite a challenge to choose what to include in his first book. Reliving life's 'training' lessons, helping someone in Africa or elsewhere, enabling others overcome sad experiences or his own, he presents his book in a light-hearted manner to not overwhelm. Such a venture to honestly put yourself out there in writing is brave, but like Esther said “if I perish, I perish”. Well, that’s not in God's agenda, because He has been enabled Dr. John to survive and thrive to serve His purposes. Life lessons shared can enable us to understand others and ourselves. It will be interesting to discover what is next for Dr. John, his wife, and Barnabas (much more than a household pet.) ( Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul M. Cinciripini -- Witty Touching and Personal : Having spent over 30 years in the field with my early years overlapping with the author, I read this book with both interest in how we both saw the field of psychology and our decision to enter it, as well as a recounting of some of our shared (and hilarious) joint experiences. But really it is more than just a book about psychology: it is a recounting of the author's personal journey with all of life's twists and turns that make the book most appealing. John shares his personal journey with the type of life-events many of us can relate to, as well as his own spiritual transformation which seems to tie it all together. The read provides touching personal moments, laughter, and serous introspection, as well as room-based analogy to the different stages of understanding the field of psychology, and in that sense will also provide a guide to any young person thinking of entering the field and understanding what to expect. But don't expect this to be just another book just about making a career decision; its more than that; and if you enjoy learning about and connecting with others in a meaningul way you will enjoy this book ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scott -- So much fun! : So much fun! The stories are great by themselves, and so, so weird! But what I really appreciated was the reflection in hindsight on some of those choices. How does a smart person think about his “bad” choices and lessons learned? Beyond that, there are some great take homes from psychology: how to fix stuttering, how to take criticism, how to have a “healthy” depression, how to motivate people, what animals can teach us. Overall, an interesting book infused with kindness, humility, and good humor, especially at himself and his own choices. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from jmf -- A great read for everyone : Psychology Confidential has appeal, relevance, and value for all of us – not just those considering or already in the field of psychology. Dr. Martin is gifted with a remarkable ability to explain complex psychological phenomena in clearly understandable ways, enriched with personal illustrations from his own life. But this book is much more than that; it is a candid story of his deep, personal journey through much suffering, lessons learned along the way, and ultimate redemption through his encounter with and surrender to God. His great wit and humor is commensurate to his refreshing transparency, making this a book that is truly engaging and hard to put down. I believe everyone who reads this will find something personally relevant and useful. With his delightful wit and frank openness, Dr. Martin gives us all a gift by sharing his story – including his own failures and eventual healing – that provides inspiration, perhaps even conviction, and hope for each reader who is open to seeing the relevance of his writing to his or her own life. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from hippoman -- Worthy of reading both in spiritual and psychological fields : "I have known Dr Martin for many years and have been a part of his spiritual journey (and he part of mine). His self-deprecating opening pages walk the reader slowly as from a gentle shoreline into significantly profound depths in later chapters as he candidly shares his struggles with relationships and with addiction. However, the area which I was most taken by was his spiritual journey which has been transformational for Dr. Martin as he has sailed on rough seas to a port of safety and peace in God. He is a remarkable person and psychologist." Dr. Joseph Ozawa, Psychologist and lay pastor ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from mike k -- A wild, educational and hilarious ride through psychology (and life) : I was amazed and marveled at Dr. John's life of so many twists and turns through his crazy, fascinating life our creator has led him into and and through. From academic through trauma to faith, there are stories galore and wild animal tales. This reader friendly book is one that everyone will appreciate and learn from- to get a better understanding of the why and what that that makes us who we are. I believe everyone will relate to a chapter or passage in this book. I recommend it highly to all. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from pwestly -- Great read either to learn, or to just enjoy! : A great read, hard to put it down. Students interested in a career in psychology would benefit from reading the trials and tribulations of Dr. John. His self deprecating sense of humor is evident throughout as he guides you through his career. He is particularly honest is discussing his own struggles and how he managed them. Well worth anyone's time. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from SH -- Hausbesichtigung mit Dr. John : „Dr.
